Type 1
S + will/shall + V1 If S + V1
or
If S + V1(s/es), S +will/shall + V1
Example:
Paijo will marry the girl if he loves her.
What is the fact?
It means: it is possible for Paijo to marry
the girl.
Exercise 1
1.The teacher (not teach) if we are noisy.
The teacher will not teach if we are noisy.
It means:
it is possible for the teacher not to teach us./to not teach us.
2. If we (win) the game, we will get the prize.
If we win the game, we will get the prize.
It means: It is possible for us to get the prize.
3.They will stay here if it (rain) tonight.
They will stay here if it rains tonight.
It means: It is possible for them to stay here.
Type 2
S + would/should + V1 If S + V2
or
If S + V2, S + would/should + V1
Example:
I would buy a car if I had money.
What is the fact?
The fact:
I don’t buy a car because I don’t have money
I don’t have money so I don’t buy a car.
Exercise 2
1. The room (be) clean if Reza swept it.
The room would be clean if Reza swept it.
It means: (the fact)
The room is not clean because Reza does not sweep it.
Reza does not sweep the room so it is not clean.
(to be past = WERE)
2. If I (bring) an umbrella, I would use it for
for my self.
If I brought an umbrella, I would use it for
for my self.
It means: (the fact)
I do not use umbrella for my self because I do not bring it.
I do not bring umbrella so I do not use it.
Type 3
S + would/should + have + V3 If S + had + V3
or
If S + had + V3, S + would/should + have + V3
Example:
Ivana would have bought it if she had brought the money.
It means: (the fact)
Ivana didn’t buy it because she didn’t bring money.
Ivana didn’t bring money so she didn’t buy it.
Exercise 3
1. The guests (be) happy if we had served traditional food.
The guests would have been happy if we had served traditional food.
It means: (the fact)
The guests weren’t happy because we didn’t serve traditional food
We didn’t serve traditional food so the guests weren’t happy
2. If I (have) money, I would have bought a cars.
If I had had money, I would have bought a cars.
The fact:
I didn’t buy a car because I didn’t have money.
I didn’t have money so I didn’t buy a car.
